On Writing

I’ve created stories since I was a little kid. My earliest memories of writing are from third grade, describing my toy soldiers and their imaginary adventures.

In Jr High I wrote scary scripts for the horror films my friends and I planned to produce. (My parents quickly squashed that idea.)

Then, with a growing interest in girls, came a season of composing sappy poetry and love songs. (Sorry, you’ll never see any of them posted here.) Academic writing in High School and college was never my strong suit, but creative writing was always a welcomed assignment.

Most of my professional career has been spent in video and television production. While the majority of my time was spent behind the camera, I’ve also written hundreds of scripts promoting businesses and their latest and greatest products and services. I had the privilege of working with many Fortune 500 companies and travelling the world with The Hunt for Big Fish, an award-winning fishing show on ESPN.

In 2005 I completed my first book, Jesse’s Boots, the fictional story of a group of young kids who discover a treasure map tucked into an old pair of boots once owned by the notorious Jesse James. The book is unpublished, but it taught me a great deal about writing a complete novel and increased my desire to do more.

A few years later, Larry Dahlberg, the host of The Hunt for Big Fish, invited me to write his memoir. The book is filled with exciting tales of foreign lands and near-death adventures, as well as the huge fish he caught along the way. It was my first experience as a ghost writer and challenging to write in someone else’s voice.

That skill came in handy in my latest project with my friend, John Whaley. In All Circumstances: Lessons of Hope in the Shadow of Illness tells John’s inspirational spiritual journey as he battles stage 4 cancer while also discovering the many opportunities God has for him along the way.

Currently, I’m working on a couple of fiction projects. One is a collection of biblical fiction stories and the other is a fun crime drama. Now that I’m no longer producing video programs, I have more time to write—and I don’t plan on quitting anytime soon.
